Inside Premiere – 5 Minutes With – Prestige (Russia)
Kaliningrad, Russia resident Prestige has been making some of the most consistent jump up DNB for over a decade. With releases on labels like Playaz, Radius and Grid, he returns to the world of DNB this month with an epic 4 track EP on Holographic Audio.
We managed to secure the world premiere of The Grave from the release, and because we’re really kind, we also managed to put together a ‘5 Minutes With’ feature for you too! Here’s what this highly creative producer had to say!
Prestige! Welcome to INSIDE DNB!
You’ve been producing DNB for 12 years now. In that time, what do you think you have learned most about yourself as an artist?
Hey! I realized that I totally suck at this social media game hehe, my pages look terribly boring, which I can’t say about life itself. So thanks for having me here anyway.
Jump up has always been your thing. What is about that particular genre that you love so much?
Yes, I would not divide DNB into any specific subgenres today, but if we talk about the impact of jump up on how it influenced the development of our favourite music, then I believe that it brought a lot of new ideas, frenzied energy and absolute freedom in choosing bass sounds and drums.
If you had to describe your style to somebody, what would you say? What do you think is your defining sound as a producer?
Oh, this is a rather difficult question, since I basically don’t have to talk about my music in everyday life, and if they ask, I prefer to translate the topic. I would listen to what people say from the outside
So, you’re a music teacher during the day. What instruments do you play, and what do you teach?
I don’t work as a music teacher, is it written in my bio? Damn, I’d have to see what they write there at all, since I didn’t write it haha. No, I went to music school at one time and just learned to play the drums. (note to producers, check your platform bio’s and keep ’em up to date!)
Have you ever considered doing something with live instruments in a DNB style?
Definitely never! When I hear live performances, I always feel Spanish shame about what is happening, even if it is done by Pendulum. No, if people like to go to concerts, then I don’t mind, but it sounds more than strange for me!
Your music has been played all across the BBC (and most probably the world!). Please describe to us the feeling that invokes.
Yes, it’s hard for me to remember the effect of this now, but before it was a powerful inspiration, perhaps even the case that says that the work was not done in vain. Fuck, I’m such a bore now, sorry, I just woke up.
On to this latest release then. This is your 6th for Holographic Audio. That’s a pretty steady relationship you’ve built there.
Yes, it’s all because of a dog named Tyke, I think you don’t need to tell that we have been working together for a long time.
This EP is an awesome collection of brain twisting jump up. The Grave in particular is just pure filth. Tell us a bit about it.
This EP is, I would say, b-sides from my major releases, tracks that didn’t fit the major labels templates. But as practice shows, my best works on the opinion of the people’s vote are just such tracks where I just did what I wanted.
You use obscure samples in your work, from films mostly by the sounds of it. Do you find that the samples provide the inspiration for the tracks, or do you introduce these afterwards?
Most often, samples are an addition, an atmosphere for the main theme. But without them, something is always missing, as if the story is not being told. In general, when I hear tracks without a single sample, I have a feeling that I was deceived. Like there is no soul in these tracks.
What other styles of music do you listen to, and do you find that these influence the music you make?
Yes, I like to go through different genres, it can be anything. But it’s more like surfing the top layer on the Internet than deep diving. And so my cucumber was pickled only for DNB.
Lastly, what is happening in Russian DNB right now, and will we see Prestige live and direct any time soon?
Let’s talk about what’s in general with DNB! And everything is fine with it. I just played in Moscow, but in the near future I have no chance to play anywhere, because…..let’s not do this! (yeah, we get it Prestige. The world has gone a bit mad)
Please follow my new releases and write what you would like to see in my social networks! I’m not going to post it anyway!
