Artist Interview – RCA (Brazil) – rolar para baixo para tradução
Brazilian DJ RCA Trash has been a mainstay on the Twitch DNB circuit for a hot minute. A member of the Xstream team and a wicked DJ in his own right, he is now venturing into production and is coming hard with his very first release via 4Jungle records.
Ritual/Silk is a two track filth fest of the highest order. We caught up with him to see what led him from try his hand at production.
RCA! Welcome INSIDE! Introduce yourself! Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Rafael, I’m from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. I’m a physical education teacher and I’ve always liked electronic music in general. I’ve been a DJ since I was 16 years old (it’s been almost 20 years now).
You’ve been DJ’ing on Twitch for quite a while now. How did you first discover the platform?
I’ve been a DJ since before I started using the Twitch platform to do my live steams. I used the platform previously to watch some game broadcasts with my son, then I started to get some music recommendations and saw some Brazilian DJ’s that were on the platform, like Marky and Lside.
And when did you decide you wanted to give it a try?
With the advent of the pandemic, I decided to return to the decks after my separation from a marriage of more than 10 years, and the music came to me as a mental therapy. I delved into these streaming platforms. Until then I was only following via YouTube.
Then at home I decided to turn my equipment back on and recorded some sets. I met with some friends too and together we started to discover how everything worked. So in mid-March 2021 I made my first broadcast via Twitch, and it was crap! (laughs!), but I persevered and invested in better broadcasting equipment, and today it’s a little better.
You’re part of the PDQ crew. Tell us a bit about them?
It’s spelled Pão de Queijo. In my city, one of the symbols we have is a bread that is made with flour and cheese, (it’s wonderful! I advise you to try it!) We have here in Belo Horizonte several talents, several DJ’s. We have known each other for a few years (about 20 years or so), but because of life’s mishaps, we ended up moving away for a while. When time allowed us we decided we wanted to start DJ’ing again.
We started meeting again and then we created the Pão de Queijo crew. The “members” are DJ Will, Gil Ferreira (the one with the sax), DJ Rush, DJ Mast, DJ Lucas Oliveira and myself.
Brazil is a hotbed of DNB talent. The scene seems to be super strong over there? Tell is a bit about it?
There is still a huge reluctance in relation to electronic music in general here in Brazil, especially with Drum and Bass, we are fed everywhere with more traditional musical styles such as sertanejo, funk carioca, pagode, these other musical styles that offer a huge commercial appeal, but create that eternal struggle between the mainstream and the underground.
We already had a golden age in Brazil about 10 or 15 years ago, and then all that went dormant, but now, with much more study and much more variety, drum and bass seems to be taking its breath again, and with that today we have several and spectacular export-style producers and DJ’s here.
Name us a few of your most memorable gigs?
I’ve always been more of a DJ who only played at home, but I did have my moments and today I’m reaching places that I never imagined I would be able to reach. I can cite moments we had here in Belo Horizonte, an event called Open Bar and this happened around 2004.
After the pandemic, things are starting to improve, and I’ve been to some bars here too. Some raid trains (where Twitch streamers ‘raid’ into other streams and take their audience with them. It’s a bit like a digital gate crash, but in a good way! Ed) that I’m part of like FluidEZ and Express Raid Bass, have a life outside of Twitch.
A memorable event that also happens here is Rua do Bass, an event that is held on the street, which is headed by DJ Will. I had the opportunity to play at this event a few times, and it was sensational! I’m looking forward to my first event outside my city, it will take place at the end of July in São Paulo.
Now let’s talk about this new single. It’s down right disgusting truth be told. How long have you been making music, and where did the idea for these two tracks come from?
I started with music production last year, less than a year ago to tell you the truth. DJ Andy, one of the greatest drum and bass DJ’s in Brazil started a music production course, the Bass Music Academy, and here I started my studies. I was figuring out what my production line would be, and then after several tries I found myself in the style I usually play in my broadcasts.
‘Ritual’ is an absolute monster. I love it. How long did it take to write?
This track cost me a good few weeks of dedication, as it was the first time I had worked with vocals on a track. Originally it would have an amen beat, but after putting elements in and out I found that an amen break would not fit the track.
The flipside ‘Silk’ takes you by surprise. It starts off quite mellow and then kicks you in the teeth. It also uses a beautiful vocal line. Where is the vocal from?
The interesting point of this track is that all the samples come from Gregorian vocals that I found in the splice.
You must be really pleased to finally have some music ready for release! When’s it due out?
It will be released on all digital platforms on the 15th of July. I am completely excited and looking forward to my first release.
Not everybody will know this, but you are INSIDE DNB’s South American correspondent. Who have you got lined up for interviews?
Here in Brazil we have several talents emerging, and I have some very interesting names like Nasz, Gil Ferreira, DJ Andy himself.
Do you have a message for the Twitch DNB crew and the rest of the Global DNB community?
It is a great pleasure to be able to share my short story with all of you. I am extremely happy to meet so many people from all over the world without leaving home, and this is only possible because we speak the same language: music!

Ritual/Silk é um festival de duas faixas de imundície da mais alta ordem. Apanhámo-lo para ver o que o levou a experimentar a sua mão em produção.
RCA! Bem-vindo INSIDE! Apresente-se! Quem é você e de onde é?
Meu nome é Rafael, sou natural de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil, sou professor de educação física e sempre gostei muito de música eletrônica em geral, sou dj desde os 16 anos de idade (já se fazem quase 20 anos)
Há já bastante tempo que é DJ’ing no Twitch. Como descobriu a plataforma pela primeira vez?
Eu sou dj desde antes de começar a usar a plataforma twitch para fazer as minhas lives. Eu usava a plataforma anteriormente para assistir algumas transmissões de jogos com o meu filho, daí comecei a receber algumas recomendações de músicas e vi alguns djs brasileiros que estavam na plataforma, alguns djs como Marky e Lside.
E quando decidiu que queria experimentar?
Com o advento da pandemia, eu decidi voltar aos decks após a minha separação, de um casamento de mais de 10 anos, e a música veio pra mim como uma terapia mental, me aprofundei nessas plataformas de stream, até então estava acompanhando somente via Youtube as lives.
Daí em casa resolvi ligar os meus equipamentos novamente e gravei alguns sets, me encontrei com alguns amigos também e juntos começamos a descobrir como tudo funcionava. Então em meados de março de 2021 eu fiz a minha primeira transmissão via Twitch, e foi uma porcaria (risos), mas fui perseverante e fui investindo em melhores equipamentos para transmissão, e hoje está um pouco melhor.
Era DJ’ing antes de Twitch então?
Sim, e o advento do twitch me fez migrar do analógico para o digital.
Faz parte da equipa do PDQ. (Esqueci-me como soletrar! Digite-o para mim por favor!) Fale-nos um pouco deles?
Se escreve Pão de Queijo. Na minha cidade um dos símbolos que temos é um pão que é feito com polvilho e queijo, uma maravilha! aconselho que experimentem. Temos aqui em Belo Horizonte vários talentos, vários djs, nós nos conhecemos a alguns anos (uns 20 anos mais ou menos), mas por percalços da vida, acabamos nos afastando por um tempo, com toda essa incursão para colocar esse nosso hobby que é ser dj novamente em prática, fomos nos encontrando novamente e então criamos a Pão de queijo crew. Os “membros” são DJ Will, Gil Ferreira (aquele do sax), DJ Rush, DJ Mast, Dj Lucas Oliveira e eu.
O Brasil é um viveiro de talentos do DNB. O cenário parece ser super forte por lá? Dizer é um pouco sobre isso?
Existe ainda uma relutância enorme em relação á música eletrônica em geral aqui no Brasil, em especial com o Drum and Bass, somos alimentados em todos os lugares com estilos musicais mais tradicionais como o sertanejo, o funk carioca, o pagode, esses outros estilos musicais oferecem um apelo comercial muito grande, aquela eterna luta entre o mainstream e o underground.
Já tivemos uma era de ouro no Brasil a uns 10 ou 15 anos atrás, depois tudo isso ficou adormecido, mas agora, com muito mais estudo e muito mais variedade, o drum and bass parece estar tomando fôlego novamente, e com isso hoje temos vários e espetaculares produtores e dj’s tipo exportação por aqui.
Dê-nos alguns dos seus concertos mais memoráveis?
Eu sempre fui mais o dj que só tocava em casa, mas tive sim meus momentos e hoje estou alcançando lugares que até então eu não imaginava que conseguiria alcançar. Posso citar momentos que tinhamos aqui em Belo Horizonte, um evento que se chamava Open Bar, isso aconteceu por volta de 2004.
No pós pandemia as coisas estão começando a melhorar, e já estive em alguns bares aqui também.
Algumas raid train que eu faço parte da organização como FluidEZ e Express Raid Bass, tiveram vida fora da twitch. Um evento memorável que acontece também por aqui é a Rua do Bass, um evento que é realizado na rua, que é encabeçado pelo DJ Will, eu tive a oportunidade de tocar nesse evento por algumas vezes, e foi sensacional!
Estou na expectativa do meu primeiro evento fora da minha cidade, acontecerá no final de Julho em São Paulo.
Agora vamos falar sobre este novo single. É a verdade nojenta a ser dita. Há quanto tempo fazes música, e de onde veio a ideia destas duas faixas?
Eu comecei com a produção musical no ano passado, a menos de um ano pra falar a verdade, DJ Andy, um dos maiores djs de drum and bass do Brasil iniciou um curso de produção musical, o Bass Music Academy, e por aqui eu comecei os meus estudos.
Fui encontrando qual seria a minha linha de produção, e então após várias tentativas me encontrei no estilo que eu geralmente toco nas minhas transmissões.
O ‘Ritual’ é um monstro absoluto. Adoro-o. Quanto tempo demorou a escrever?
Essa faixa me custou algumas boas semanas de dedicação, pois foi a primeira vez na qual eu trabalhei com vocais em uma faixa, originalmente ela teria uma batida amen, mas depois de colocar e retirar elementos, descobri que o amen break não caberia na faixa.
O flipside ‘Silk’ apanha-o de surpresa. Começa bastante suave e depois dá-te um pontapé nos dentes. Utiliza também uma bela linha vocal. De onde vem o vocal?
O ponto interessante dessa faixa é que todos os samples vem de vocais gregorianos que encontrei no splice.
Deve estar realmente satisfeito por finalmente ter alguma música pronta para lançamento! Quando é que vai ser lançada?
Será lançada em todas as plataformas digitais no dia 15 de Julho, estou completamente empolgado e ansioso por esse meu primeiro lançamento.
Nem todos o saberão, mas o senhor é o correspondente sul-americano da DNB. Quem tem em fila para entrevistas?
Aqui no Brasil temos vários talentos despontando, e tenho alguns nomes bem interessantes como Nasz, Gil Ferreira, o próprio DJ Andy.
Tem uma mensagem para a tripulação do Twitch DNB e para o resto da comunidade Global DNB?
É um prazer enorme poder compartilhar com todos vocês a minha breve história, eu fico extremamente feliz por conhecer tantos pessoas do mundo inteiro sem precisar sair de casa, e isso só é possível pois falamos a mesma língua: a música!
