Techstep has and always will have a special place in my heart. I just love that slamming snare drum and the two step sensibility of it. It’s powerful and technoid and frankly irresistible. Just saying.
When this 6 track EP dropped into the inbox a while back I felt determined to track down the creators, especially when I realised they are from Russia/Ex USSR, because I love to learn and I am keen to know more about our beloved sound and its developments in Eastern Europe. The result of this research took me to Moldova via Moscow, and here is the result! INSIDE DNB proudly brings you VaSa!!!

Hi, I am Vasilisa Vasilieva from Moldova, Tiraspol.
So DNB is strong in Russia right now? If this EP is anything to go by, then it’s pretty much on fire!
Actually, though I’m Russian, I’m not quite from Russia. I’m from Moldova, which used to be part of USSR before its dissolution. So, it’s difficult for me to speak about the whole of Russia, but I know that in Moscow and St. Petersburg the genre is pretty popular.
What styles would you say are most popular there at the moment?
I guess, there are several highly popular sub-genres at the moment, like liquid funk, techstep, neurofunk, jungle and, somewhere in England probably even jump up.
And who should we be keeping our eye on (in your opinion). Who is currently killing it in the Russian DNB scene right now?
There are plenty of very talented musicians in Russia and ex-USSR. Many of those DNB producers are completely underground. Many of them release their music on KOS.MOS.MUSIC. These guys really rule and move the music forward in Eastern Europe. They’ve got lots of artists with real vision making highly dance floor friendly material. Definitely, they are the leaders! It’s hard to highlight someone, however Electrosoul System and Dissident are up there.
You’re just 24. The classic techstep sound you’re creating is straight out of the late 90’s (with a modern twist). What is about the sound of classic techstep that made you want to sit down and write this EP? Where does the influence for that sound come from?
I’ve listened to DNB since I 13-14 years old, but I enjoy other various genres like techno, metal and hip-hop. I used to practice music, and then started trying to produce it myself. I also used to work for a company which deals in music and audio effects, so I have a background in equipment.
This is hands down one of the best EP’s I have heard in quite a while. In fact, I can’t stop playing it. The beats are relentless and the sounds just swallow you up. Can you explain how some of the ideas for these tracks came about?
Well, I just start throwing beats and the tracks comes up, like with Acid City. As for Crocodiles, I heard that afro sample and just wanted to do a techstep track based on it.
The idea of Ride Droids was brought by A.T.5 . The car alarm was yelling for several hours in his yard and he recorded it. I was working on a beat at the time and wanted to create some iconic techstep tracks, so that’s the way it worked.
With Witch Metal – the initial idea came from Alan A.T.5, as well. He sent some demos and I was searching through the witch-house sample pack, plus we added some metal to make it more spicy!
Tranny’s Hell – I had an anxious mood and it turned out to be an anxious track, and after a TV program I watched, the name of the track appeared. I think it compliments the music well!
Gangsta Sheet – the idea was to produce an industrial dub based on a jump-up rhythm, and it became such a bouncy DNB track!
So, how did you even get into DNB, and producing DNB?
I would like to practice producing different genres of music eventually, but it’s only DNB at the moment that I’ve released.
What equipment are you using right now?
PC Laptop, Komplete Audio 1, Ableton Live, KRK RP5G4, Senheiser HD25
The drum sounds on these tracks are so clear and crisp. What sources are you using?
I’ve got a big sample library, saved from the time I used to work for the musical company and it’s still filling up! As for processing, I mainly use EQ and compression.
The tracks have some interesting titles! Can you elaborate?
It depends. Some are inspired by events at the time. Some ideas for titles come from my friends. Plus, I find often fine basic song titles often used for DNB tracks pretty boring!
You have hooked up with A.T.5 for a couple of the tracks. How did that come about?
Alan A.T.5 used to live in Moldova (he now lives in Romania) and we were workmates. It turned out that we like the same music and that’s how we hooked up.
How has the scene in Russia fared under the constraints of the Pandemic? Has raving been a possibility, and if so where are the hot spots?
In Moldova, there is no actual scene. In Romania it’s a bit better. In Russia, based on the news from my friends, it’s pretty good. Parties are going on, even if not so active as they used to be before.
KOS.MOS.MUSIC are the label releasing Acid City. How did this partnership come to fruition?
They’ve got a series of releases named “Supernova” devoted to young artists or producers who are newly signed to them. Alan and I sent our tracks and they liked it and came back for more. So initially A.T.5’s EP with my participation was released and now its vice-versa.
There is A LOT of DNB experience within the label. Releasing through them must be very encouraging for you as a new artist?
Right. I’m glad to collaborate with this label and they are super creative (as you can see by video teasers for “Acid City”, for example)
So, the name for the EP ‘Acid City’, what is the main reference there?
I suppose, it’s a reference to the way people destroy their planet, thoughtlessly using chemicals everywhere.
The artwork is awesome! Did you have any input into that?
No. The artwork is fully the label’s idea. As far as I understand, they make all the artworks by themselves.
Tell us a little bit about your plans for the coming months. Do you have more releases lined up?
For sure, there is lots of unfinished material, but producing music is not my main activity, I do it in my spare time. I’ve passed several tracks on to KOS.MOS.MUSIC, but I have no idea about their fate yet!

Так значит, DNB сейчас силен в России? Если судить по этому EP, там просто пожар!
На самом деле я хоть и русская, но не совсем из России. Я из Молдовы, которая была частью СССР до его распада. Поэтому мне сложно говорить обо всей России, но я знаю, что в Москве и Питере этот жанр достаточно популярен.
Какие стили, по вашему мнению, сейчас наиболее популярны?
Я предполагаю, что на данный момент есть несколько очень популярных поджанров, таких как ликвид-фанк, техстеп, нейрофанк, джангл и, возможно, где-то в Англии даже джамп-ап.
И на кого мы должны обратить внимание (по вашему мнению). Чей ДНБ доминирует на российской сцене прямо сейчас?
В России и странах бывшего СССР много очень талантливых музыкантов. Многие из этих днб-продюсеров находятся в подполье. Многие из них выпускают свою музыку на KOS.MOS.MUSIC. Эти ребята действительно рулят и продвигают музыку в Восточной Европе. У них куча артсистов с очень новаторской и крайне танцевальной музыкой. Они точно впереди многих! Мне сложно когото выделить, точно что Электросоул Систем и Диссидент неподражаемы.
Тебе всего 24. Классическое звучание Techstep, которое ты создаешь, прямо из конца 90-х (с современным уклоном). Что такого в звучании классического Techstep, что заставило вас сесть и написать этот EP? Откуда берется влияние на этот звук?
Я слушаю DNB с 13-14 лет, но мне нравятся и другие жанры, такие как техно, металл и хип-хоп. Раньше я занималась музыкой, а затем начала пытаться создавать ее сама. Я также работала в компании, которая занимается продаже музыки и звуковыми эффектами, поэтому у меня есть опыт работы с оборудованием.
Это без сомнения один из лучших EP, которые я слышал за последнее время. На самом деле, я не могу перестать заниматься этим. Биты безжалостны, а звуки просто поглощают вас. Можешь объяснить, как возникли некоторые идеи для этих треков?

Треки имеют интересные названия! Можете ли вы уточнить?
По-разному. Некоторые вдохновлены событиями того времени. Некоторые идеи для названий приходят от моих друзей. Кроме того, я часто нахожу красивые базовые названия песен, часто используемые для треков DNB, довольно скучными!
Вы записали пару треков с A.T.5. Как это произошло?
Алан А.Т.5 раньше жил в Молдове (сейчас живет в Румынии), и мы были коллегами по работе. Оказалось, что нам нравится одна и та же музыка, вот так мы и подружились.
Как поживает сцена в России в условиях пандемии? Был ли возможен бред, и если да, то где горячие точки?
В Молдове нет реальной сцены. В Румынии немного лучше. В России, судя по новостям моих друзей, неплохо. Вечеринки продолжаются, пусть и не так активно, как раньше.
KOS.MOS.MUSIC — лейбл, выпускающий Acid City. Как сложилось это партнерство?
У них есть серия релизов под названием «Supernova», посвященных молодым артистам или продюсерам, которые недавно подписали с ними контракт. Мы с Аланом прислали наши треки, и они им понравились, и они вернулись за новыми. Так что изначально был выпущен EP A.T.5 с моим участием, а теперь наоборот.
У лейбла БОЛЬШОЙ опыт работы с DNB. Выпуск через них должен быть очень воодушевляющим для вас как для нового артиста?
Правильно. Я рада сотрудничать с этим лейблом, и они очень креативны (как вы можете видеть, например, по видео-тизерам для «Acid City».
Итак, название EP «Acid City», какая главная отсылка к нему?
Я полагаю, это отсылка к тому, как люди уничтожают свою планету, бездумно используя повсюду химикаты.
Обложка релиза потрясающая! Вы как-то в этом участвовали?
Нет. Обложка полностью принадлежит лейблу. Насколько я понимаю, все работы они делают сами.
Расскажите нам немного о своих планах на ближайшие месяцы. У вас есть еще релизы в очереди?
Конечно есть много незаконченного материала, но создание музыки не является моей основной деятельностью, я занимаюсь ею в свободное время. Несколько треков я отдала на KOS.MOS.MUSIC, но об их судьбе пока не знаю!
