Artist Profile – Dizrupt (Brazil)

There’s no denying that from the outside looking in, Brazil seems to be having a tough time of it at the moment.  When it comes to drum and bass however, the country seems to be going from strength to strength. With a whole host of new producers coming through in recent years, and with a strong foundation covering several decades for them to grow from and aspire to, it seems there is no stopping the creative flow for the South American scene right now.

Dizrupt is just one of the new breed of Brazilian pioneers forging a name for himself across the Globe, and we’re super proud to be working with him and Dispatch Recordings, to bring you an exclusive premiere of the track ‘Clocks’ from his new EP ‘Rackle’ and an interview to go with it.

Read on to find out a bit more about this guy’s production techniques!

Dizrupt! Welcome in!

Hello Dan!! Thank you for having me here!

So, you’ve been getting some solid support by the likes of Noisia, Bryan G and your native Brazilian headliner DJ Andy to name a few. That recognition must be a great boost to your productivity?

For sure! When they showed me that support I was speechless, and the productivity to make my music sound better and more relevant really increased after those legends kept spreading my music out.

You’ve been producing music for around 10 years now, so what would you say have been the core values you’ve learned that have helped you the most?

For me, the core values are ‘do your own thing’ and ‘make sure your music reaches the places that it deserves to’.

It’s a crowded scene out there right now. DNB is in a healthy state across the world and there is a lot of really high-quality music out there. How have you managed to stand out from the crowd? What would you say is your signature move?

I always try to think outside the box, and this helps me a lot in developing my sound by reaching the next level of my production.

One of my signature moves is ‘don’t limit myself to make music with just a computer’

Oh yeah, for sure! We fell in love with the new ‘Rackle’ EP and ‘Clocks’ in particular, and were gassed to have grabbed that track as a premiere.  We think you’re quite unique in that you wrote it on a guitar first. You use an Epiphone SG (which is an iconic guitar in it’s own right) and manipulate the sound using effects?

Yes, I just record long takes with my guitar and after that, I select the best parts to use and then re-arrange the sounds using effects and pitch adjust.

Is this a standard method for you? We’re guessing that you were a guitar player before you discovered DNB?

This method seems to have endless results because I can play my guitar thinking it’s just a fancy synthesiser. Sometimes I use this, otherwise I record some samples and prepare the session before I start producing. And yes, I have played electric guitar since I was a kid but I stopped for a long time and came back to it at beginning of the pandemic.

We love this, and have talked about the rock/rave link many times. What you’re describing here is yet another link between metal/rock and DNB. The similarities are endless. Are you planning to incorporate this approach in any more of your music?

Sometimes I like to incorporate some riffs in my productions and ‘Rackle’ and ‘Sandman’ have a lot of those here and there… I think my main approach is to make good tunes by taking inspiration from a lot of styles of music.

‘Rackle’ featured on Noisia Radio in 2021 via a friend of our site, Dave ‘Colombo’ Jenkins. That show is a big deal by anybody’s standards. You must have been very happy with that?

Yes!! when ‘Rackle’ got played by Vision Radio and I was super happy! Big up Dave and Noisia for this moment!! I remember I was very tired because I spent a lot of time in the studio and that came on the Vision Radio, totally recharging my energy!

Using organic sounds and field recordings is also something you incorporate into your productions. We love to see people thinking outside the box and manipulating sounds from everyday life. What kind of sounds do you use, where do you source them, and what do you think they bring to your music?

I like to make a lot of experiments by recording sounds, and one example of that is on my tune ‘Tropical Storm’ where I recorded some ambiences and a lot of one shots, to make my drums and basses sound more organic, by adding the foley sounds as a layer. I also got some decent organic sample packs that I recorded, so I’m always bringing some flavour to my whole palette of sounds.

Tell us a bit about your equipment set up then? What are the key components?

My equipment so far is pretty simple. I just use a powerful PC / Roland a-500pro as midi controller / Epiphone SG /H4N pro / Focusrite 2i2 first gen / Yamaha HS8 and Audio Technica Headphones.

And what about you as a person away from the music? What are you into?

That is a funny one! I’m into music 99% of my time but I love to travel, eat good food, go for long walks at the beach and spending time with my loved ones.

Sound just perfect to us! Thanks for chatting Dizrupt! Good luck with the new EP!
