Free Book Download! – Rise Above The Dark Forest Of Addiction

Matt Horton, AKA DJ Zent, owner of DreamBassUK Records got in touch with me a while ago. Having already Premiered a couple of tracks for the label on our SoundCloud page and having got to know him loosely through music, he wondered if I'd be interested in helping him promote an e-book he'd written about addictoin, and his persoanl experience with it.

Being a DNB website with less emphasis on popularity and more focus on real life, I of course said yes. I feel that anybody involved with the music has a duty to spread love and offer assistance when and where possible. Life can be a challenge at the best of times, and we all have a story to tell. And sometimes, help to offer.

That’s definitely the case with this project. Almost all music scenes are rife with substances that are not particularly conducive to good health and wellbeing, and ours (and EDM generally) probably top the bill in terms of overuse and abuse. Most of us know someone who has fallen foul at some point (including ourselves), and many know people who have passed too. It’s a worldwide epidemic, but we can all play a part in offering support and guidance.

When thinking about the most appropriate way to help Matthew promote his project, Q&A just didn’t seem to fit the bill. It felt too personal, and too messy. So we decided on this instead. Here’s some excerpts from the book, and a bit from Matthew himself.

I’ve always seen things not just from a different point of view but from a multitude of perspectives. I felt like I could see through everything. I guess I was a cynic, and it was often the bane of my life. Yet, I was doing exactly that—escaping my own reality. I was so blinded by my own ego that I couldn’t stop to think for a second about what I was actually doing with my life.

I had that realisation when I first went traveling in late 2016. I was in a natural thermal pool in Panama with my newly wedded wife. Surrounded by gigantic rocks and a flowing river, it was a beautiful sight I had never seen before. All of a sudden, it started raining. At first, we didn’t know what to do. We had walked two hours to get there (yes, it was well off the beaten track), and we were the only ones there. We looked at each other and laughed. There was nothing to do—we were in the moment.

I decided to get naked and stand on a big rock. I don’t know why—I just felt compelled to. Then, I had a lightning-bolt moment of clarity that I had never experienced before. I thought to myself, What am I truly doing with my life? I couldn’t answer. It terrified me, and my gut told me I had to stop drinking, smoking, and taking cocaine. I didn’t really know it was my gut at the time, but it definitely was. It took around three to four long and arduous years to finally kick them all.

As people started seeing my transformation, I began DJ-ing & producing professionally. It got me traveling around the UK a lot. A year or so later, as I mentioned before, a few people I knew—and a few I didn’t—reached out to say I had inspired them to stop drinking. I couldn’t believe it. Then, not long after, I went searching for the drafts and notes I had written down all those years ago, and the vision became clear. I wanted to help people stop vices and become their best selves.

So, once again, a big thank you for reading. I truly hope you are now living a life you feel proud of and are happy with.

This book is entirely free. I didn’t want to pursue traditional or digital publishing; I simply want to get it out there—by word of mouth—and let it spread naturally. I hope it has reached you because of that.

If you’ve been positively impacted by this book, I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to drop me an email and share your story.

So Matthew, this project must have taken quite a while to fruition. Tell us the main reason you decided now was the time to share your story with the world?

Well, I believe after being so clean of alcohol, tobacco and cocaine for so long, and being 100% certain I would never enter the dark forest again, I felt it was the right time to share this information for free, to as many human souls as necessary!

Having never been afflicted with chronic addiction, asking you a load of personal questions just didn’t seem right, but what would like to say to potential readers of the book, either about your own experiences, or about what drove you to create the project in the first place?

Hmm! That’s a tough one indeed. I would say in an ever changing and fast paced world (if you choose to live in it), there are many, many many distractions from our one true path. On top of that, short term fixes such as alcohol, cocaine and tobacco offer a short term fix.

But we must ask ourselves, do we wish to live the rest of our lives in this turmoil, or ascend to the divine beings of light and creation we are, and make the world and those around us a wonderful, magical playground that this earth is and should be?

As a spiritual person and a believer in the power of the universe, this resonates with me 100%.  Good luck with the book, and all the best from team INSIDE DNB!

Did some bits for Eternity Magazine back in the 90s, then some bits for Knowledge and UKF over the last 20 years on and off. Now running this website as a form of therapy, but also to keep in touch with the music and pay it forward, both to established artists and the new gen, because without them the music dies.
