His latest 3 track EP is out today (15/4/22) on Kosenprod and we took the chance to catch up with him about his music and more.

Today (15/4/22) sees us premiere the track ‘Culture Shock’ from his latest EP on French neuro leaders Kosenprod. Press play and read on!

Hi MV, Welcome to INSIDE DNB! You’re based in the Canary Islands! What’s the DNB scene like there?

Well, Covid has done a lot of damage to the night scene across all the genres. Now we are finally getting back to normal, so we are starting strong!

Always, as in many other places  the underground rave scene is big here. In the past we have worked with artists like Benny Page, Miss Represent and Zardonic, but here it’s becoming more and more common the big festivals with names like Noisia, Netsky, Friction, Calix.

In a month, the island will have its first “Let It Roll” with names like Teddy Killerz, Kove and DC Breaks.

How have things been there over the last few years? for yourself personally?

When Covid closed all the clubs, the public and labels focused more on production. I’ve had a lot more visibility and been signed to big labels quickly. In that part of life, everything has been wonderful for me.

If you had to describe your style of music to somebody who has never heard it before, what would you say?

Lately I joke about doing “neurofloor”. I like to look for very forceful sounds that are still danceable. Also most of the songs have a lot of space sounds. I like that my taste for Sci-Fi and Anime is reflected in my work!

What was your musical background before DNB then? What were you into growing up and more recently, and has it influenced your style now?

Well, if you listen to my tracks you will see that most of the time they don’t have such electronic structures. Since I was a child I listened to metal, post hardcore or avant garde. From Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Patton, Fantomas…always crazy and creative music!

I really pay attention to strange sounds a lot. I would say that my biggest influences are artists like Kolt, Burr Oak, Screamarts. I also love Synergy or Malux Drums!

What drew you to neurofunk over all other styles of DNB? Why does it appeal to you so much?

I love the creativity of basses and forcefulness of the drums of the genre. It has a very high level of sound design. I’ve always loved the futuristic touch that these tracks have. The neurofunk intros and settings are so cool.

If you are looking for energy and complexity, this genre is for you.

Have you experimented with any other styles? Say jungle, or liquid?

Sure! In the past I have worked with the Ragga Twins on vocals on several tracks and I also have dared with more commercial dancefloor with Grecie Van Brunt a couple months ago. Personally, a track that I love is Illegal Rave, that touch between jump up & neuro is addictive! In my opinion you shouldn’t stick to a single genre. I just express the way I feel at the time.

You make breaks as well though?

In the canary islands this genre is widely listened to. There is a huge British influence here. Round One is one of my favourite tracks I’ve ever made. Also this year I will try to release another EP of the genre. It will be a busy year!!

Tell us a bit about how you first started making music?

My beginnings in music were with my guitar in my hands playing in clubs. Until the day came when they told me to pay abusive bills for recording. I thought about buying the equipment and learning how to record myself, and so I became a maniacal sound engineer!

You’ve had releases on labels all across the world! Have you ever thought about starting a label of your own?

In the future it’s quite possible that I will. I would love to work with all the friends I make along the way on the islands and see them grow.

But right now the goal is to expand internationally and reach higher. In everything, luck can go a long way, including getting good. Excellence requires time and dedication.

We are proud to be able to premiere one of the tracks from the latest release. Can you talk us through the tracks, and the story or inspiration behind them?

This EP is a clear statement of intent. I think the genre is getting more and more complicated and we are forgetting the message. This EP is neurofunk direct for the dance floors.

“Make Noise” is my current track. Futuristic intros and electric basses. I think I was right to introduce those very catchy and evil stabs. It could be the soundtrack of a Lovecraft adaptation haha.

“Roll To Up” is my favourite from the EP. The bass is so strong! I thought about doing a rave theme with broken boxes. Here you can also see my influences from Mob Tactics. They have already sent me promo videos from many places, from Spain to the US or Johannesburg. It’s wonderful to get this far!

“Culture Shock” is DNB by the book. Catchy and tough, the goal was to create a track that could get played in any session.

This is your first release on Kosenprod then? They are leaders in neurofunk!

Yeah… It’s a dream come true! When you start on a small island you don’t think about reaching that high. For me it is a great pride to be part of the Kosenprod family. I admire their artists a lot and their tracks have always been a great inspiration to me.

Do you have a set schedule for making music? Like, do you have a policy of 1 or tunes a month maybe?

You always have to be disciplined. I try to spend an average of at least 4 hours a day on the computer. But creative jobs are hard! I can do a 3-song EP in a weekend or take 1 month. When I’m blocked I try to focus on sound design, watch movies and read for new ideas.

And your studio is at home?

Yes, before I used to work recording live bands at home but now I’m totally focused on my own music. I’ve been building a nice home studio over the years.

So, you are looking forward to some sun in the Canary Islands now the summer is coming?

Yes! festival time! They also announced recently the end of the Covid restrictions here. Many international artists will come. There are already two huge festivals confirmed with great artists. I will also travel to the UK and the rest of Spain. It will be a fun summer!!

Well, we wish you the best of luck with the release and thank you for taking the time to talk to us!
